How to Choose Your Race
Consider your timeline. A beginner needs at least eight weeks of structured training. If a race is closer than that, pick a later date rather than rushing your preparation. Walking into a race underprepared is far less fun than waiting a month.
Think about travel. A race in your home region means fewer logistics, less stress, and more energy for the actual event. If you want to turn it into a destination trip, build in a rest day before and after.
Pick a division. Singles means you complete all eight stations and eight kilometers of running yourself. Doubles lets you split the station work with a partner while you both run the full distance. Relay is a team of four. First-timers often love doubles for the built-in support.
Check the weather and season. Races are indoors, so weather does not affect the event, but it affects your training. A December race means building your base in the fall, which is a great time for aerobic work.
Work Backward From Race Day
Once you pick a date, build your plan in reverse:
8 to 12 weeks out: Start structured training with running, strength, and station practice.
4 weeks out: Begin race-specific sessions that combine runs and stations.
Race week: Cut volume by roughly 40 to 50 percent, keep a few short, sharp efforts, and focus on sleep, hydration, and fueling.
The week before: Pack your bag, test your pre-race food, and rehearse your race plan mentally.
Don't Forget the Logistics
Register early. Popular events sell out and ticket prices often rise as race day approaches. Book travel and lodging as soon as you register, and plan your arrival so you are not rushing on race morning.
Show Up With a Plan
The athletes who have the best experience are rarely the fittest ones. They are the ones who know what to pack, how to warm up, how to pace the eight runs, and how to stay calm when it gets hard.
That is why I built my HYROX Race Day Guide, now $9.99, down from $14.99, for a limited time. Inside you will find 11 instructional videos covering race-day prep, warm-ups, pacing, and station strategy, plus downloadable PDFs including a full race-week plan and a race-day packing checklist you can pull up on race morning.
